How to choose an e-Learning supplier?
By Alvaro Alfaro Account Manager
When an organization makes the important decision of allocating resources to e-Learning initiatives to improve its business processes, it is also making an important investment decision; therefore, it should study and carefully choose its provider and carry out a thorough analysis of the supplier’s capacity to implement the e-Learning project successfully.
A major factor to consider is that e-Learning is not only software development. The consulting and content development element is more time consuming and organizational resource-intensive than the application schedule.
A common e-Learning supplier analysis model is based on a study of the phases to implement an e-Learning project successfully, as well as a supplier capacity evaluation in each stage
e-Learning supplier analysis from a customer point of view
Phase I:
Requirement Analysis
Has the supplier carried out analogous projects in industries similar to my organization?
How long has the supplier been carrying out e-Learning projects?
Is the supplier devoted mainly to e-Learning or to a secondary business?
Phase II:
Content Development
Does the supplier count on experienced instructor/designers?
Has the supplier shown me products proving its experience to develop e-Learning contents?
Does the supplier provide a good balance between exercises, theory, and online activities?
Phase III:
Software Design
Does the supplier have a permanent professional software development team?
Does the supplier follow e-Learning guidelines consistent with international quality standards (for instance, AICC, IMS)?
Does the supplier provide knowledge management tools?
Phase IV:
Field implementation
Does the supplier have a specialized implementation team?
What kind of implementation support does it provide?
Phase V:
Support and updating
Does the supplier provide updating service if necessary?
What kind of technical support does it provide?
Choosing an e-Learning supplier in the early stages is critical to achieving expected operating improvements and results and to providing the organization with support in this kind of initiatives.
